A neuroscience school – co-funded by IBRO and UNESCO – titled “Neurobiology of Infectious Diseases: A View for Global Neuroscience” will be held at the University of La Réunion, in St. Denis, La Reunion Island, from November 27 to December 6, 2010.
This school is an inter-regional event shared between IBRO’s Africa Regional Committee (ARC) and Western Europe Regional Committee (WERC), with participation from the IBRO Asia-Pacific Regional Committee (APRC), and will be co-organized by the International Association of Neuroinfection Studies (IANIS).
The school - which will be open for 30-35 students from Africa, Western Europe and Asia - will bring new developments on emerging infectious diseases and disclose that basic neuroscience must play a crucial role in research on the pathogenesis of these diseases that burden tropical and developing countries.
This inter-regional school will establish an African-Western European–Asian collaboration and deepen the initiated endeavors. As a result, the students will have the unique opportunity to learn about the pathogenesis and pay attention to important gaps in knowledge of some of the most prevalent diseases of the nervous system, which otherwise are rarely addressed in neuroscience. The school will be held on the premises of the University of La Reunion. The island of La Reunion is located in the Indian Ocean, at the border between continents of the world burden by tropical diseases of the nervous system, i.e., sub-Saharan Africa, India and beyond.

Running concurrently with the school, the second International Conference on Infections of the Nervous System, organized by the International Association of Neuroinfection Studies (IANIS), will take place from December 2 to 6, 2010, in St. Denis, Reunion Island.
